OLYMPIA, Wash. – Local punk Kyle Watkins, 33, made the startling discovery that his ex-girlfriend Erin McCoy is a completely normal productive member of society now, follow up Facebook searches confirmed.
“Erin and I dated for three crazy years man, I was kind of drunk and feeling a little lonely so I decided to look her up. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, she had on mom jeans and a frumpy shirt. But worst of all, she had this super reasonable, age appropriate haircut,” Watkins said about his former pit-warrior/lover. “It’s completely symmetrical, dude.”
McCoy, who was known as “Bulldogg” during her punk days, was a staple of the Olympia punk scene in the early 2000’s, known for her aggressive dance moves and willingness to mix it up with anyone looking for a fight. The recent discovery that she is now a mother of two young boys and married to a salesman for advanced medical prosthetics has shaken Watkins to his core.
“I never thought I would see the day. This is the same girl who bit off the cap of a beer bottle because no one had an opener, and fronted one of the most violent bands in the scene,” Watkins said. “There was even one time where a Fire Marshall tried to shut down a show in her basement and she hate moshed the guy until he ran away sobbing. It was crazy.”
When asked to comment on the situation, McCoy responded via email from her three-bedroom, two-bath suburban home outside of Oklahoma City.
“Oh yeah, my infamous riot grrl days? Once I went to college I sort of unleashed a new side of myself and may have lost control a little bit, but I like my new life. My boys are a handful, but to be honest I would rather get peed on by one of them than some random guy on stage who thinks he’s the reincarnation of GG Allin,” McCoy said. “Fuck that shit, I drive a Range Rover now.”
Watkins also confirmed that his Facebook stalking led to the discovery that his high school best friend is now a cop and “absolutely does not” want to get the band back together.

Crass got what it was about too – listen to “White Punks on Hope” and “Bloody Revolutions.” The only things a political party is good for are oppression and hegemony.

A am a bit confused. Being punk is neither defined by a haircut nor the mom jeans. It sits deep inside you. It is the understanding of our social system(s) and the urge to question and revolt. So while I (mostly!) look like a average girl I still feel like I don’t belong . The prototype of a “normal” life still scares me, because you cant simply “unpunk” yourself, there is nothing “un-mature” about that either. There is no point where you can just ignore or set aside the knowledge that punk and its political allies provides us. And if you do like the comfort of being a tool of our society to the full extend, then you may never been been a punk.
Everyone can buy a Ramones shirt at H&M but standing up against injustice and trying to lead a conscious life takes courage and character.

But I’ll play devil’s advocate, because I’m a cantankerous, contrarian old fountain of bile, and what you’re saying grabbed my attention.
So just one question – how exactly is driving a range rover, wearing floral prints and cheap jewelry because the other girls at the office do, and pumping out a unit once per year until one has met her quota for life “standing up against injustice and trying to lead a conscious life?” Where is the “courage and character” in complete conformity. I mean, if that was so punk, we’d have never had to be punk in the first place, right? I do realize that it is an unpopular choice as punks age to hang onto the angst that made them punks in the first place, and I would agree with you that a person is not defined by their haircut or mom jeans. However, at the same time, let’s be real – a certain kind of person does gravitate toward frumpy shirts, mom jeans, and Range Rovers. It has nothing to do with objectification and everything to do with that nagging old need to be accepted by the other frumpy normals. Not sure if this is true or not and I will say that these 2 words are hardly put together but it is possible to be “classy” and punk at heart. I after a lot of soul searching had to put away the colored hair, chains, ripped clothing and general fuck it attitude but I still don’t conform to everything, I question authority, find out facts and make proper decisions based on what I know vs what I used to “think” I knew. I like to save the fun stuff for concerts and things like that it’s Kind of fun gives you a reason to lead a double life ya know…. It is not easy either when you come to the realization that your starting to mature, I personally mourned my old self it’s not a easy transition but it’s something that can be pretty remarkable!

In terms of this blog, I don’t think style makes a dam* bit of difference. Erin can still change the world by questioning, researching, and making her voice stand out. IN FACT, by “conforming” in style, she may be able to initiate change that she couldn’t before because mainstream people will listen to her.
This exact reason was a motivating factor for me not coming out as atheist to our Christian community and why we still remain closeted to some. While our authenticity and honesty to our close friends and family has resulted in turmoil yet AMAZING freedom, sometimes I wonder if it would have been better to remain closeted, for their sakes (because then maybe they’d listen.) Why is it so hard to believe that someone grew up? I used to be a hardcore goth junkie homeless street kid weirdo but I decided before it was too late to do something with my life that I didn’t want to spend my entire life going in and out of jail for drugs and now I live in a nice suburban apartment and do demos at costco for a living… it isn’t the best I could have done but it is definitely nice having a home and a functioning brain.
